Help, Any Advice?

Dear Friends and Readers,

I usually wait until my work is hot off the presses to announce a publication because I am superstitious, but this time I need help so- here it goes! Spread Magazine is going to publish my Stripper Tarot cards!!! Yay!! Make sure you head over there and buy yourself (and friends) a subscription so you can not only see my moment of glory, but also keep up to date with Sex Worker issues worldwide.

They want 4-6 cards with 200-300 words of accompanying prose for each. I am very intimidated by the challenge of trying to sum up each girl in 300 words. Most of my readers are writers too so if any of you could search through the Stripper Tarot pieces I already have on my blog and tell me the parts you find most important- that would be a big help and will get you lots of kisses from me.... someday.

They will publish the cards and direct their readers to my blog to read more of the stories behind the cards and to buy individual cards or the finished deck (when it gets finished, that is.)

I have until March 15th to figure this out. I have two more cards to add to the four I have already finished. I will be sure to post their pictures and stories in the next few days.

Thanks, ya'all. Now get your butt over to Spread and subscribe!

Bootyclap,
Davka

Girl, that is an AWESOME bit of publication. Congrats to you. And I'll be looking over the tarot - check your email soon.

thanks! i am really worried about summarizing them in 200-300 words, but I am going to try to look at it like an ad for the full deck, or the sets I will be selling which will come with a booklet with all the prose.

Dane, thank you so much. I love you!
Yes, Nikki, I am going to e-mail you because I have a question about how lurid I am allowed to be. ;)

Congrats and proceed with caution.

Do u have a literary agent yet?
Have you tried to get one?
Projects like this are often what open the door for an agent.
Be careful with the distribution rights (that's film talk- I know more about film than writing)
Make sure you own the idea, you own your work and rights to publish it with them or another publisher and distribute it in the long run.

Dear Davka:
Read your posting about the Stripper Tarot, and Good Upon Ya, Girl.
But--forgive me--I don't know you well enough to understand why you’re intimidated about writing this up.
What exactly are you afraid of?
It would seem that 200-300 words from you would be something you could knock out in, like, zero time, given your gifts and seeming lack of blockage.
So, question time: are you afraid of writing about each of these cards because they're based on real people and you're concerned about alienating them? Or perhaps ticking off ones who are perhaps not the most libran of people...maybe even aberrant personages?
This sounds--to my psyche--like not so much a writing problem but a rewriting and editing worry. Am I completely off-base here?
Anyway, if nothing else, the place to start is......all of these people--like me--who support you. Tap that energy and GO FO' IT, KID!
REGADS!

Hey Doc ;),
Thanks for the support! :) I am mostly intimidated because I wrote elaborate essays to go with each girl. For example, Wicked Wisdom's essay is over 2000 words long. So summarizing her in 300 feels difficult to me. So much of the meaning behind the cards goes with the story. Dane (see above, she rocks) is helping me, so I am not as scared as I was, but I want the readers to be really captivated by the words and not just the images.

I am always a little afraid people will read my work and think they are there where they aren't. I had trouble with that this summer when someone made a mistake in thinking I included them and another girl in an essay when I didn't. But I guess I am not as worried about that as I used to be.

I just have to keep breathing! :)

Have you seen the animal Medicine Card deck?
each animal/card has pages and pages written about it.
I'm pretty sure most tarot cards have many more than 200 words to describe the energy-
so
perhaps and excerpt for each card which would be enticing as well as not compromise your stories.

Hara, yeah, I am treating it like an advertisement almost for the deck and the blog where people can buy the cards in sets of 6 as they are developed, with an accompanying booklet of the stories.
